The 14 major stars (十四主星) are the principal characters of every Zi Wei Dou Shu chart. Your birth year, month, day and hour fix Zi Wei — the emperor — into one of twelve palaces, and the other thirteen stars take their positions relative to it, like a court assembling around a throne. Whichever major star occupies your Life Palace becomes, in common usage, "your star" — the protagonist of the chart.
How the fourteen organize themselves
Six stars travel with the emperor — the Zi Wei series: Zi Wei himself, Tian Ji (his strategist), Tai Yang (his nobility), Wu Qu (his wealth general), Tian Tong (his child of fortune) and Lian Zhen (his politician). Eight travel with the southern throne — the Tian Fu series: Tian Fu the steward, Tai Yin the moon, Tan Lang the wolf, Ju Men the gate, Tian Xiang the chancellor, Tian Liang the elder, Qi Sha the warrior and Po Jun the breaker. And the Sun and Moon stand opposite each other in the middle heavens, the only two stars that shine by their own light.
Three alliances matter more than the rest. Sha-Po-Lang (杀破狼) — Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang always in each other's triangular sight — is the axis of upheaval: lives of bold starts and big swings. Ji-Yue-Tong-Liang (机月同梁) — Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tian Tong, Tian Liang — is the axis of stability: administration, craft, endurance. And Fu-Xiang (府相) — Tian Fu with Tian Xiang — is the treasury-and-seal pair of wealth held by trust. Most people live near one of these alliances; knowing yours is half the reading.

None of these are good or bad
Zi Wei Dou Shu has no unlucky star — only unlived ones. Every major star arrives with a gift and a shadow wearing the same coat: the strategist's brilliance and its anxiety, the emperor's authority and his loneliness, the wolf's vitality and its hunger. The quality of a chart is decided by brightness (庙旺利陷 — the same star shines differently in different palaces), by the minor stars attending it, and by the palace it occupies — a warrior star in the Wealth Palace spends very differently than in the Marriage Palace. The honest answer to "is my star good?" is always: good at what, for whom, next to whom.
