BaZi (八字, "eight characters"), also called the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理), is a Chinese astrological system formalized over a thousand years ago. It writes your birth year, month, day and hour as four pairs of characters — a Heavenly Stem (天干) above an Earthly Branch (地支) — and reads the Five-Element and yin-yang relationships among them to map personality, timing and recurring life themes. With eight characters drawn from a 60-pillar cycle, a chart is one of more than half a million combinations before timing cycles are even considered.
The four pillars, and what each one governs
Each pillar is a layer of life. A complete reading weighs all four together — the same character means different things in different positions.

Ten Stems, twelve Branches, sixty combinations
The characters come from two cycles. The ten Heavenly Stems (天干) are the five elements in yang and yin form; the twelve Earthly Branches (地支) are the zodiac animals, each also carrying elements and hidden stems. Paired in sequence, they produce the sixty Jiazi (六十甲子) — the grand cycle used to label years, months, days and hours alike.

BaZi runs on solar terms, not calendar months
BaZi months are set by the 24 solar terms (节气) — astronomical markers in the sun's annual path. The BaZi year begins at Li Chun (Start of Spring, around February 4), not on January 1 and not at Chinese New Year. Someone born on February 3, 1990 still belongs to the 1989 chart year; someone born two days later belongs to 1990. Any calculator that ignores solar terms will hand you the wrong month pillar — and roughly one chart in twelve is affected.
The Day Master: the character that is "you"
The Heavenly Stem of your day pillar is your Day Master (日主) — one of the ten stems. It is the reference point for the entire chart: every other character is read by how it relates to this one. A Yang Wood Day Master meets the world as a tree — principled, upward, unbending; a Yin Water Day Master meets it as rain — gentle, penetrating, reaching what others miss.

The Ten Gods (十神) translate element relationships into life themes. Each is defined by how another stem's element and polarity relate to your Day Master:

The balance among them is what a reading interprets: a chart rich in Hurting Officer with no Officer reads very differently from one with Officer and no output stars — even for the same Day Master.
Luck cycles: the natal chart is terrain, Da Yun is weather
Your eight characters are fixed at birth, but time keeps moving through the same sixty-pillar cycle. Da Yun (大运) are 10-year luck periods that rotate from your month pillar, starting at an age computed from your birth. Liu Nian (流年) are the individual years. A Wood-strong chart may flourish in a Water decade that feeds it and grind through a Metal decade that cuts it. This is where BaZi becomes a timing tool: not "what will happen" but "which years favor building, and which favor consolidating". A yearly pillar never overrides a luck cycle — the decade sets the climate, the year brings the weather events.
