How to find your Friend

Every Ten God starts from the Day Master, and Friend is the simplest of the ten: it is your own Heavenly Stem — same element, same polarity, yang with yang, yin with yin — sitting on the year, month or hour pillar. A Yang Wood (甲) Day Master with another 甲 anywhere in the chart has a Friend; so does a Yin Fire (丁) Day Master with a second 丁. The Chinese name, 比肩, means "comparing shoulders": two people carrying the same load, side by side, neither one above the other.

In other words: your Friend is your own Day Master's stem, appearing on the year, month or hour pillar. Where it sits says who the peer is — siblings and roots (year), colleagues and equals (month), teammates and late-life allies (hour). What Friend feels like from the inside

The Friend-heavy person trusts themselves first — not out of arrogance, but because consulting the self is simply faster. They carry their own weight as a point of identity: I'll handle my part is the sentence they were born saying. Equality is their native language — they speak to the boss and the waiter in the same tone, and they notice, instantly, when someone is spoken to in a different one.

The single most valuable use of this star: a weak Day Master's best rescue. A weak self — outgunned by its own chart, pressed by too many Officer stars, drained by too much Wealth, emptied by too much output — gains from Friend what it gains from nothing else: more of itself. Classical doctrine is unambiguous: 身弱喜比劫, "a weak self delights in Peers." Where every other medicine arrives with side effects, Friend strengthens a weak Day Master like nothing else — the same element, the same sign, no tax.

The second gift is resilience: Friend is a reserve of selfhood. After a loss — a job, a fortune, a person — the Friend-strong chart rebuilds, because the self was never outsourced to begin with. And the third is collaboration among equals: genuine partnerships, crews and teams where the load is shared without drama, because no one is waiting to be rescued and no one is charging to rescue.

When the pie gets divided

The classical warning has a name: 比肩分财 — Friend divides Wealth. The mechanics are visible in the chart itself: your Wealth star is the element your Day Master controls, and your Friend — being your same element — controls the same thing you control. The mirror image reaches for the same wallet. In life this arrives as the partnership that splits the pie, the brothers dividing the inheritance, the co-founders diluting each other's equity, the equal who borrows and fully means to repay. For a strong Day Master, many Friends mean wealth with permanent extra claimants on it: the earning is steady; the keeping is the leak.

And below the money question sits the shadow of the star itself:

The Friend-heavy professional is the partner everyone wants on the other half of the load: punctual with their half, honest about the numbers, still there in year ten. Money-wise the pattern is consistent — steady earning, leaky keeping — and the discipline is arithmetic, not greed: fewer, better-chosen partners; equity written down while everyone still likes each other; loans to equals budgeted as gifts.

Friend in love

Friend brings to intimacy the same constitution it brings everywhere: a shared life with separate spines. These partners are loyal, level and low-drama — but they must remain a self while loving, and they show love by carrying their half rather than narrating it. Two frictions are typical. First, self-sufficiency can read as distance: they will quietly over-carry for years before asking for help, and the partner who never hears a need may conclude there isn't one — the remedy is saying the need out loud, which for this star is actual work.
